A TikToker preparing to experience homelessness is documenting the process on the platform.
Sapphire Callisto (@sapphicsapphy) began a series last week called “Preparing for Homelessness,” in which they opened up about their impending circumstances.
“I never thought this would be my life,” they wrote in the caption.
“Welcome to day one of me prepping to be homeless,” the TikToker said. “We’re not homeless yet, but it’s going to happen, and I have the privilege of being prepared for this.”
Callisto — who has a full-time job — explained how they found an apartment but didn’t believe their application would be strong enough. As a result, they were going to look for storage units for their belongings and try to find a hotel to stay in.
The experience was new to Callisto but was familiar to some of the people in the comments.
“Was just homeless for a few months and finally found something this week u will be okay girl ik it’s so hard but the next blessing is right there,” said @jasminpoole.
In the Know by Yahoo reached out for further comment but has not yet received a response.
In a second video, Callisto revealed that their car had broken down on the way home from work.
“While these videos are really hard for me to make because it’s extremely vulnerable and embarrassing, I do appreciate the opportunity to show people what it looks like for real life,” they said in the second video. “There are a lot of misconceptions about how someone becomes homeless, or even what homelessness looks like.”
According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, nearly 600,000 Americans experienced homelessness in 2022. Furthermore, a 2023 story from The New York Times stated one factor heavily contributing to homelessness is the rising cost of housing, which @sapphicsapphy is facing firsthand.
However, there might be light at the end of the tunnel. Callisto posted a third video in the series sharing that they found a potential apartment, which received cheers from the viewers.
“Omg. I really hope you can get the place! rooting for you,” said @llstiktoks.
There hasn’t been an update on whether they signed a lease, but more installments to the series might be coming.
