Woman finds familiar note in thrifted table: ‘What are the chances?’

A woman who bought a pair of secondhand bedside tables was in for a shock when she found a note inside written by her younger sister.

Thrifting stories on TikTok can really highlight how small the world is. In February, a man went viral on the platform after he found a stranger’s TikTok that showed the digitization of a thrifted VHS tape. The twist? The tape was of his 1989 family vacation. In the comments, he explained that the tape probably got lost during a move.

Mom was moving and a couple of old tapes got lost in the process,” he wrote in a comment. “But still — magically almost — they found their way back to us.”

In an eerily similar situation, TikTok user @valenciascalifornia, who goes by Valencia on the app, uploaded a clip talking about what she found at Goodwill because the coincidence was too surreal not to share.

“The weirdest thing just happened, and I’m not making this up,” she said in the video. “I literally don’t care how many people comment and say, ‘Oh my God, this was staged.’ My heart’s like a little trembly, this is really cool.”

Valencia goes on to say that she bought the tables at Goodwill, and when she was emptying out the drawers, she found a crumpled up piece of paper with some names and phone numbers — which she recognized immediately.

“It legit says: ‘Carly’s home number and mom’s cellphone number,'” she said. “It has my mom’s cellphone number and our home phone number from, like, 15 years ago.”

Her youngest sister is also named Carly.

“What are the chances of that?” she asked.

After further investigating the other notes in the drawer, Valencia pieced together that a childhood friend had been involved in the letter-writing too.

The comments couldn’t believe the coincidence, and some viewers shared their weird thrifting stories, too.

“Perfect example of what’s yours will always come back to you,” a commenter posted.

“I found my mom’s handmade dollhouse fireplace from 1972 in a Goodwill,” someone wrote. “On the bottom was her name and date. She grew up in New Jersey and we’re in Arizona!”

“I unintentionally bought bar stools from the bar my family [had] owned,” another said. “I think sometimes we are just drawn to things we’ve already interacted with.”
