What is the ‘wow that’s awesome’ TikTok sound about?

The video trend features quick glimpses of things people found fascinating when they were younger, along with the sound effect, “Wow, that’s awesome.”

If there’s one thing TikTok loves more than anything, it’s little moments of unexpected nostalgia, and a new meme making its way around the app has been serving that up in large doses.

According to Know Your Meme, the trend started in early 2023 after a video of cows slipping on black ice went viral. As it played, the AI-generated sound effect “Wow, that’s awesome” could be heard in the background.

Eventually, though, the trend morphed into something much different.

Now, examples of the meme highlight forgotten things that many of us loved as kids, like Magic Eye books and Pogs.

Some share things we did just to feel “cooler.”

A ton of memes also feature somewhat eccentric things we did when we were alone that we probably didn’t think were weird at the time — like Googling random facts or researching incredibly niche topics that our little kid brains were oddly intrigued by.

Still, the vast majority of examples seem to come from people who confess to truly bizarre — and sometimes kind of disturbing — interests as kids.
