Twitter memes Taiwanese 7-Eleven mascot OPEN-Chan blowing away in storm

Article by Emerald Pellot

Published on Dec 20, 2022

A Taiwanese mascot has become a muse to music fans on Twitter.

A viral video of an inflatable OPEN-Chan, the country’s 7-Eleven mascot, blowing away and drifting off into a cloudy sky inspired the musical meme. Footage of the unexpected moment was reposted on Twitter by @takigare3 from YouTube, sparking an instantly wholesome meme.

In the clip, a gust of wind carries the inflatable through a crowd on a busy street. OPEN-Chan floated right up into the overcast sky as passersby watched and an upbeat song played in the background.

According to Taiwan News, the incident occurred at the “OPEN Big Balloon! Dream World” parade and concert in Kaohsiung on Dec. 16. The event included 17 large inflatables like Hello Kitty and Snoopy.

OPEN-Chan landed about 8 miles from its initial ascent. Apparently, it flew so high it entered restricted airspace.

The footage has received over 5.9 million views and 199,000 likes on Twitter since Dec. 18.

The OPEN-Chan video prompted Twitter user @DeanBray1 to swap the musical score to “Defying Gravity” from the Broadway musical Wicked.

“For the musical theatre geeks,” he wrote in the caption.

The user @mcreedance called the OPEN-Chan footage “whimsical” and added an orchestral rendition of “Simple and Clean” from Kingdom Hearts.

For a more on-the-nose version of the meme, @Jimadebo used Frank Sinatra’s “Come Fly with Me.”

I added „Don‘t stop me now“ onto it. ❤️🤣👍 pic.twitter.com/MNOQNe0IZ5

OPEN-Chan got to float off to Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now” in @profjpg’s video.
